I'll get the ball rolling - who knows if anyone will join this or not.. Anyway,

I'm Mark, the guy who'se set this up mainly as a repository to download game music I've written during the past 16 years that I've been working in the industry.

I'm married, have a baby son and am currently working for Codemasters in UK, looking after the sound for their racing/driving games.

I've not written any published original game music since Dungeon Keeper 2 in 1999 although I've done a bit of mobile music since then. I'm still writing music, mainly for fun and am currently working on a remix album of my 1995 Cyberspeed music (it never sounded how I wanted it to).

I started the forum as I've seen a lot of positive chatter on the internet about the music I've written for games like Duke Nukem Total Meltdown, Populous the Beginning and Cyberspeed so thought there may be an opportunity to talk about all of this stuff more.

Maybe, maybe not.. Time will tell.

Howdy!

I'm Bill.  I'm an artist in Southern California and I work in a couple different industries.  I work in the movie industry in miniature effects, do graphic design and am an illustrator. 

I first heard about Mark's music when I started playing Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat back in high school.

Hello, I'm Connor. I am 17, currently in high school, and just generally love video games, to the point that I've made it a hobby collecting the soundtracks. Currently, I have around 125, Dungeon Keeper 2 being one of them. I may have been 7 at the time, but Dungeon Keeper 1, 2, and Starcraft were my most frequented games.

Hey, I'm Ben!

I'm currently at college, and have discovered the wonders of Cubase in my Music Technology lessons. I'm hoping to move into a career involving sound engineering, or whatever you might call it.

Thumbs up to Mark, who's work I've been subconciously enjoying for years without knowing who he was until I spotted him on the Codies F1 2010 forums!

At the moment, I'm just planning to play about with Cubase as much as possible, and hopefully begin to create engine sounds for one of the various rFactor F1 Modding teams that are out there.

I'll be interested in your progress with that one. Contrary to the belief of a lot of people on the Codies forum, lol, it's not easy especially when you're trying to achieve a high degree of accuracy, and not helped with slow gear changes *cough* ;)

People say that F1 Gamers are the most learned and have very high standards. That forum has proven that we are just plain idiots! I have F1 Games as far back as '97, and your team has topped them all on the sound front!

I'm not sure how I'll go about creating engine sounds just yet - I don't think I'll have access to any formula one cars in the near future!

At least rFactor has those wonderfully speedy gear changes :)

*grin* - thanks. Yes, it's been difficult to hold back on the forum. Officially I'm not supposed to post at all, but Helios lets me because generally the result is positive. Here, I can post what I like but taking into consideration that Codies do pay my salary, so obviously my loyalty remains there.

The problem with sound is so many people think they're an expert, and then you get the "and F1 car doesn't sound like that" comment. Hehe. What we've done, is something which has never been done before in and F1 game, and actually placed recording equipment inside F1 cars and recorded them on track. What we ended up with are most likely the highest quality recordings ever taken, by anyone. For TV, whilst the microphones are obviously placed in the car, the audio is transmitted over the airwaves to a broadcasting unit. To do this, certain amounts of EQ and compression are used to transmit the sound over a limited bandwidth.

We built our recording equipment into the cars and recorded in full quality 96khz, 24 bit quality. Of course, our mics would be placed in slightly different areas which would change the sound, but ultimately the process is the same but better... and then we're accused of not having realistic sound in the game.

The gear change situation does have to change, but audio have no control over that.

As for the rFactor mods. Most of those sounds are taken from passby recordings, and flattening the pitch, looping it to make 'rev bands'. Certainly for replays, that sounds more realistic than what we currently do, but not for onboards.

And please don't distort the sounds to oblivion and back ;)

I can't imagine how frustrated you must get!

It's the same all around that forum. "The handling is nothing like an F1 car! I've got no experience of anything like it, but my opinion is a lot more valid than Ant Davidson's!"

I'll post up how I get on, but I'll be focusing on getting my head around the basics first.

One other point on a completely different subject - I noticed you posted that you've got a handy trick that slightly off-sets notes on a Cubase track to get rid of the Quantized feel. Is that just you moving things around, or a bit of software to do it for you?

Haha, that's true. Ant doesn't always get things right thought, he told us the F1 engines idle at around 9000RPM. Nooooooo!

Yep, make sure you are showing the inspector on the left side of the Cubase screen, and on the midi plugins section enable a MIDI modifier.

In that you can set a Random. Set this to position, and have a min of - 10 to 20, and a max or + 10 to 20 depending on how this sounds to you.

Hi everyone!

My name is Adam and Im a 3D artist working in mining simulation by day and a small indie company making games by night in Perth, Western Australia.

I first heard Mark's great compositions in the Warhammer games. My friend and i played Shadow of the Horned Rat and Dark Omen to death on PS1 and we loved the soundtracks so much we used to play them in the background while we played the tabletop version of warhammer and D&D as well! Over favorite tracks were the theme from Horned Rat and "Battle 2" from Dark Omen. It really helped set the mood in battle scenes!

Just wanted to say thanks Mark for the great music!

Good evening people, My name is Arthur. I live in England, near Milton Keynes, and I am 14. I currently spend my free time making maps for Valve's games and skyping with my friends. We were watching videos on youtube together and we came across various remixes of video sources in the style of "Gutsy Garden" from the Super Mario Galaxy II soundtrack. One thing led to another and my friend Christiaan popped up and said "I found the music for Populous 3!" Now, I had always loved Populous. It is my favorite old game, beating Age of Empires I & II by a hairs width. If I had to pick a favorite game developer, I'd be stuck between old times Bullfrog / Mucky Foot and Modern day Valve. Populous was practically the only thing I played from ages 7 - 9, before I picked up Half Life. ( That would then be a major turning point in my gaming career. ) I still remember the soundtrack and I can recount it effortlessly. I never did finish the game, but I had the ending ruined for me by surprise on youtube. :P. Now I spend my free time Modeling for short stories and games with Blender and Occasionally composing music on Sibelius. I also have a knack for texturing, but my main skill, ( and the thing I am most proficient at ) is mapping. It is my intention to be a part of a small indie game group and somehow accumulate enough money to live with my friends in some flat somewhere by the time I leave home. That is pretty much all I want from life. Besides a tablet. And a nice keyboard. And a SSD. And a 200 Gig 1.8" external hard drive. Did i mention the tablet?

For some composers it's the other way around. A few days ago, I found out that Michiel van den Bos, who did the soundtracks for Overlord 1 and 2, also did the soundtrack for Age of Wonders. Mind. Blown.
